Default How do I log chat history to file?

How do we log chat history to a file so that we can later review the conversations? I was told that there is an option or command line somewhere.

Perhaps maybe to a text or html file.

You were told wrong; no such command exists. The only way to save chat is to take a bunch of screenshots.

Or make a vid with Fraps or something and just scroll through the text.... that seems a bit creepy/strange.

You can't log it, but temporarily maximizing the textbox and taking a screenshot works well enough.

It: I don't see how wanting to log something is creepy/strange; it works well as a reference, and it's used all the time with things like IRC. It really comes in handy for the channel/network admins when you need to smack someone.

Agreed. It's used a lot in many many other games. It would be simple enough for A-net to implement it. Just write it all to a text file (depending on which ones you have checked), stored in the same place as the screen shots. Everything in the chat box is already SENT to your machine to be able to display it anyway. They could also easily implement a way to only keep the logs for a week etc, unless you move them (to not have hundreds of logs taking up space).

This would really help guild and alliance admins in handling things....swearing (not allowed in our alliance), rudeness etc etc.

So, come on A-Net, how about it?!

Still, do you want all the stuff in Local or Trade in there? When you uncheck the boxes, it hides the text, so I'd assume that logging would include that too, unless they specially coded it to keep track of the checkboxes. It'd still get pretty messy, though. Maybe a separate file for each channel would work...

I would like to keep a log of my guild and/or alliance chat. Group chat 2 would be nice to keep track of good groups that way and/or tips posted.
and if it logged whispers it would be easyer to repot the ppl pming me about buying gold.

On a related note: does the textbox have a time/space limit on its history, or does the chat remain available until you exit the game?

This may seem like a queer question, but I don't own the game yet. Thankyou very much.

As more and more come through the chat it pushes other stuff up so eventually it will disappear. Also, not sure if it's correct or not, but it seems to me that if you leave the chat window open it goes faster. Which is just stupid...

I see how it works then, thanks. So it seems the chat log must at least stored somewhere, if it contains that much text from the Local and Trade channels.

Does anyone have an idea on where I could ask about being able to dump the chat file? .. Is PlayNC support inappropriate for that question?

I'd be willing to try anything, since the chance for something as inessential to gameplay as this (with an opposition, even) becoming a developed feature is nil.

If it was in a text file, it would be able to be easily changed and there fore open to abuse of the system.

See how messy it's getting? There's your proof. The more they give, the more we want. It's just not fesable.

You could say the same of any feature. It does not have to become messy, it can simply be a .txt ouput as he mentioned, with full logs from all channels. It doesn't even have to be visibly implemented, only a -command shortcut would be necessary, like "-logging."

And that's just nonsense. Outputted text, and even the text in your memory can't be abused. That's local file information, with no transference to the server.

This is a basic, harmless implementation that would be very useful to all sorts of players, but especially higher-ranking ones who care about the community as much as the gaming.
